Companies and Industry

The worldwide economic panorama is composed of countless small, medium and large companies. These industries can be grouped into two principal categories: those that produce material goods and those that provide services.

Let’s begin with a simple definition of a company: a group of people and goods organized so as to reach certain economic goals through business. We thus include in this category: small local organizations that produce organic foods or artisans that create unique products or restaurants that offer their clients local and consistently fresh cuisine.
Another important method of classification is according to area of expertise. In fact, we often hear of the following fields:

  • The primary sector which largely includes agricultural (farming, breeding, hunting, fishing) and mining companies. This sector is referred to as primary since it fulfils people’s primary needs.
  • The secondary sector includes companies that operate in the industrial sector (raw materials processing, energy production, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, construction, the artisan class).
  • The tertiary sector of the economy includes companies that provide services such as banks and insurance, gastronomy, tourism, transportation and communications companies.
  • The advanced tertiary sector is a recently defined category including organizations specialized in IT, marketing, research and development and legal, technical and financial consulting. This last sector is in constant expansion as it provides extensive support to “primary” industrial activities.

In order to create
and sell any type of product, market studies, research, surveys and marketing are needed. These activities are expertly carried out by companies that are established precisely for this purpose and which provide highly qualified and specialized personnel. Italy is definitely one of the countries with the largest number of professionals in this field.

In all fields, but especially in the tertiary sector, the internet and the most advanced communications systems of today (such as satellites and digital data transmission) have provided enormous benefits, reducing costs, saving time and thus allowing space for greater creativity and ingenuity.
